Aluminum-clad steel reinforced conductors serve extra-high, high, and medium voltage transmission lines and can also be used as earth wire. Besides featuring on secondary and primary distribution cables, ACSR/AW is also used for bare overhead transmission.
When compared with ACSR conductors, ACSR/AW has a reduced weight, further corrosion protection, and a higher current capacity, guaranteeing a longer service life and energy savings. The increased ampacity and corrosion resistance are a result of the aluminum cladding from the steel core.
The American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) provides the following international standards for ACSR/AW conductors.
This concentrically-stranded conductor consists of an aluminum-clad steel core (Alumoweld) with a layer or more of hard-drawn aluminum 1350-H19 wire. Alumoweld, a high-resistance steel rod, is covered with a pure aluminum coating, cold-drawn to extract the required wire diameter.
Although ACSR/AW conductors match the dimensions and designs of regular ACSR conductors, ACSR conductors have a steel core. Conversely, ACSR/AW conductors are made of aluminum-clad steel wire.
