Applications

ACSR/TW wire offers efficient use for a variety of applications, from overhead transmission to primary and secondary power distribution. ACSR/TW conductors come in two primary designs. The first design provides an equal area design of aluminum compared to standard ACSR conductor measurements. This smaller diameter conductor of equal area helps control the effects of wind and ice on the wire.

Conversely, the overall outside diameter of the second design matches that of the standard ACSR conductor sizes. By using the equal-diameter conductor, you get more ampacity than the standard ACSR conductor thanks to the increased cross-sectional area, which minimizes AC resistance.

Specifications

ACSR/TW conductors match or exceed these ASTM specifications: B779 Shaped Wire Compact Concentric-Lay-Stranded Aluminum Conductors, Steel-Reinforced (ACSR/TW).

  • B230: Aluminum 1350-H19 for electrical applications
  • B498: Galvanized (zinc-coated) steel core wire for overhead conductors
  • B500: Aluminum-clad or metallic-coated stranded steel core for overhead conductors
  • B606: High-strength, galvanized (class A zinc coat) steel core wire for overhead conductors
  • B802: Zinc-aluminum-mischmetal (Zn-5Al-MM) alloy coat, steel core with three Zn-5Al-MM coating classes dedicated to mechanical reinforcement when manufacturing aluminum conductors; steel reinforced.
  • B803: Round, high-grade, zinc-aluminum-mischmetal (Zn-5Al-MM) alloy coat, steel core wire, consisting of Class A Zn-5Al-MM coat used for mechanical enhancement when manufacturing aluminum-alloy and special aluminum conductors.
  • B957: Round ultra-high-strength and extra-high-strength, Class A zinc-coated steel core for overhead conductors.
    B958: Round ultra-high-strength and extra-high-strength, Class A zinc–five percent aluminum-mischmetal alloy-coated, steel core wire for overhead conductors.

Construction

ACSR/TW occurs when aluminum 1350-H19 trapezoidal wire is concentrically stranded around a steel core. ACSR utilizes the Class A galvanized (GA2) standard wire coating. Moreover, you can get extra corrosion protection by applying grease to the core wire or complete conductor.

Although ACSR/TW is standard, the wire also comes in the following variations.

  • ACSR/NS: Non-Specular finish
  • ACSR/AW: Aluminum-clad steel core
  • ACSR/HC: High-Conductivity aluminum
  • ACSR/TW: Trapezoidal-shaped aluminum wire
