ACSR (Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced) Wire

Copper is among the best conductors and boasts incredible durability. While these attributes make it a natural choice for transmission lines, copper’s added weight can increase support structure costs.

As such, aluminum is the next best option thanks to its lightweight and affordable nature. However, it lacks the tensile strength for all-weather performance.

Aluminum conductor steel reinforced (ACSR) wire helps address these issues. The ACSR core wire is made of steel surrounded by aluminum conductors, which enhances its tensile strength while maintaining conductivity.

You're in the right place if you're looking for these attributes for your next project. But first, let's highlight the main features of ACSR aluminum wire.

A Range of Applications

Aluminum conductor steel reinforced cables are appropriate for various spans on transmission towers, wooden poles, and other structures. Its applications range from extended, extra high voltage (EHV) transmission lines to sub-service spans at utilization or distribution voltages within private properties.

ACSR wire boasts a long service record, which is because of its cost-effectiveness, reliability, and strength-to-weight ratio. The combination of aluminum's reduced weight and great conductivity and the steel core’s high strength allows for higher tensions and longer spans.

ACSR Wire Specifications

ACSR wire from Peak Substation Services achieves these ASTM specifications:

ACSR Construction

ACSR is made of 1350-H19 aluminum wire arranged in concentric strands around a steel core. Its standard core wire is galvanized with a class A coating. Alternatively, you may opt for the class A core stranding, which is coated with zinc-5% aluminum-mischmetal alloy.

Despite having steel, the cable has enhanced corrosion protection because of the core or due to complete greased cable infusion. Notably, non-specular ACSR conductor variants are also available. All these attributes explain the decreased ACSR wire price point.

Wire Properties

ACSR conductors are classified into these categories:

  • All Aluminium Conductor (AAC). This conductor type primarily contains aluminum strands, commonly used for its reduced weight and cost-effective nature.
  • Aluminium Conductor Aluminium Reinforce (ACAR). This conductor type combines aluminum strands and a steel core. It's designed to balance strength and conductivity.
  • All Aluminium Alloy Conductors (AAAC). This category consists of wire made entirely from aluminum alloy. This wire is prized for its enhanced strength and corrosion resistance.

Aluminium Conductor Steel Reinforced (ACSR). This type of wire consists of a central steel core surrounded by aluminum strands. It combines strength and conductivity.
