Personal Protective Equipment – Requirements and Other Considerations

When it comes to substation safety requirements, personal protective equipment is integral, here are the most important requirements you should be aware of regarding personal protective equipment.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Requirements

It is the employer’s responsibility to communicate the required PPE to employees and other on-site workers, based on a thorough assessment of the unique risks of the employer’s substation. The type and style of PPE that provides the most protection may vary between substations.

Required PPE on site is as follows:

  • Hard hats (full/partial brim depending on use)
  • Face masks/shields
  • Insulating gloves and tools (rated)
  • Suitable footwear (rated dielectric, steel toed)
  • Safety glasses with side shields
  • Equipment designed for confined, barricaded, and scaffolded spaces where necessary
  • Gas/smoke detectors where necessary

Depending on the presence of batteries and other chemicals on your substation, you may need respirators and other chemically resistant PPE.

PPE Training

PPE and neglect of safety procedures

Personnel must be trained not to neglect safety protocols simply due to the use of PPE. The proper PPE only reduces the severity of injury and potential risk if safety procedures are followed.

 Use and maintenance of PPE

Providing proper equipment is only the first step in promoting personnel safety. Training in the following areas is also required to ensure proper safety for those with access to the facility:

  • Maintenance and care of PPE
  • PPE inspection for damages
  • Proper use of PPE for certain tasks
  • All safety and emergency procedures

When workers are properly trained and adhere to safety protocols and regulations, they protect themselves and others from potentially life-threatening substation hazards. PPE, when used properly and in accordance with safety procedures, protect workers by ensuring a safe work environment.
