Need Polymer Insulators Fast? Let Us Find Them For You!
Polymer Insulators can be hard to get. Mainly because the number of manufacturers making them is limited. That said, we have good relationships with our sources, so we can generally deliver polymer station post insulators in one to six business days — but it usually takes several calls to our contacts to find the quickest lead times.
That said, the typical procurement lead time for polymer insulators is approximately 8 weeks, though this can vary based on specific requirements and supplier capabilities.
About Substation Polymer Insulators
Polymer insulators are widely used in substations for the following applications:
1. Busbar Insulation Support:
Used to insulate and support high-voltage busbars and bus ducts, especially in outdoor switchyards.
2. Circuit Breaker and Switch Support:
Serve as insulating components in high-voltage circuit breakers, disconnectors, and switches.
3. Post Insulators:
Commonly used to support conductors and equipment while electrically isolating them from grounded structures.
4. Bushing Insulators:
Installed at the terminals of transformers, circuit breakers, and other equipment to allow safe passage of conductors through grounded enclosures.
5. Line Terminal Insulation:
Used at incoming and outgoing line terminals in substations to insulate the connection point to overhead transmission lines.
6. Surge Arrester Support:
Support structure for surge arresters, often replacing porcelain-based mounts.
7. Instrument Transformer Insulation:
Used in current and voltage transformers to insulate internal windings from ground and external parts.
These insulators are preferred over porcelain in many modern substations due to their lighter weight, better pollution performance, high mechanical strength, and resistance to vandalism and breakage.

Common Substation Polymer Insulator Materials
The normal materials used for polymer insulators in substations are:
1. Core Material
- Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP): Usually made of epoxy resin-bonded glass fibers. It provides high mechanical strength and electrical insulation.
2. Housing and Weather Shed:
- Silicone Rubber: The most common due to excellent hydrophobicity (water repellency), UV resistance, and pollution performance.
- EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer): Offers good weather resistance and is sometimes used as a cheaper alternative to silicone rubber.
- HTV (High-Temperature Vulcanized) Rubber or LSR (Liquid Silicone Rubber) may be used depending on manufacturing process.
3. End Fittings:
- Galvanized Steel, Aluminum, or Ductile Iron: Used for mechanical connections to the structure and conductor.
Polymer Insulators Vs. Porcelain Insulators
| Feature | Polymer Insulators | Porcelain Insulators |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Fiberglass core with silicone/EPDM housing | Ceramic (porcelain) |
| Weight | Light (30–50% lighter than porcelain) | Heavy |
| Mechanical Strength | High (better tensile and bending strength) | Good, but brittle under mechanical stress |
| Pollution Performance | Excellent (due to hydrophobic silicone surface) | Moderate to poor (prone to flashover in pollution) |
| Breakage Risk | Resistant to impact and vandalism | Brittle—can shatter under mechanical or thermal stress |
| Installation & Handling | Easier (less lifting equipment needed) | More difficult (requires more support during install) |
| Maintenance | Lower (self-cleaning surface in many cases) | Higher (needs regular cleaning in polluted areas) |
| Aging & UV Resistance | Good (depends on material quality) | Excellent (very long aging life) |
| Cost | Slightly higher upfront, but lower lifecycle cost | Lower initial cost, higher maintenance over time |
| Application Areas | Widely used in modern substations, polluted zones | Still used, especially in legacy or extreme environments |
