Need Porcelain Insulators Fast? Let Us Find Them For You!
Finding Porcelain Insulators fast can be difficult. How do we do it? We have an excellent network of industry contacts. Which is why, on average, we can deliver Porcelain Insulators within 1 week.
How To Lock-In Discounted Pricing On Porcelain Insulators
One key benefit we’ve introduced for our longtime customers is negotiating manufacturer discounts based on Annual Contract amounts. We’ve learned that most customers can project their need for porcelain insulators from year to year, and when manufacturers are assured of volume purchases, they’re willing to offer volume discounts. (NOTE: Manufacturers understand that projected purchases are estimated, so the volumes specified in our annual contracts are also understood to be flexible).
About Substation Porcelain Insulators
Porcelain insulators are traditionally and widely used in electrical substations for the following main applications:
1. Post Insulators
- Purpose: Support and insulate busbars, disconnect switches, or other live parts from ground.
- Use Case: Mounted on structures or equipment to carry and isolate conductors.
2. Bushings
- Purpose: Allow high-voltage conductors to pass safely through grounded enclosures.
- Use Case: On transformers, circuit breakers, and wall penetrations.
3. Cap-and-Pin Insulators
- Purpose: Used in dead-end or suspension arrangements in substations with overhead line connections.
- Use Case: Especially on incoming/outgoing transmission lines entering the yard.
4. Current and Voltage Transformer Insulation
- Purpose: Provide external insulation and support for instrument transformers.
- Use Case: In both medium and high voltage substation metering/protection equipment.
5. Disconnect Switch Insulators
- Purpose: Electrically isolate open parts of the switch from grounded metal structures.
- Use Case: Found in switch stacks and rotary-type disconnect switches.
6. Surge Arrester Housings
- Purpose: Insulate the internal metal-oxide varistors (MOVs) and protect from the environment.
- Use Case: Traditional porcelain surge arresters are still in use in older installations.
7. Wall Bushings or Feedthroughs
- Purpose: Insulate conductors that pass through walls (e.g. control rooms or transformer bays).
- Use Case: Used in substation control buildings or GIS terminals.
Porcelain Insulator Advantages in Substations:
- Durability: Excellent long-term aging performance.
- Thermal Resistance: Can withstand high temperatures without degradation.
- High Mechanical Strength: Good for vertical loads and large conductor tensions.
Porcelain Insulator Disadvantages:
Porcelain is heavier, more brittle, and less pollution-resistant than modern polymer insulators. Despite this, it remains in service, especially in older substations or extreme environments.

Porcelain Insulators Vs. Polymer Insulators
| Feature | Porcelain Insulators | Polymer Insulators |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Ceramic (porcelain) | Fiberglass core with silicone/EPDM housing |
| Weight | Heavy | Light (30–50% lighter than porcelain) |
| Mechanical Strength | Good, but brittle under mechanical stress | High (better tensile and bending strength) |
| Pollution Performance | Moderate to poor (prone to flashover in pollution) | Excellent (due to hydrophobic silicone surface) |
| Breakage Risk | Brittle—can shatter under mechanical or thermal stress | Resistant to impact and vandalism |
| Installation & Handling | More difficult (requires more support during install) | Easier (less lifting equipment needed) |
| Maintenance | Higher (needs regular cleaning in polluted areas) | Lower (self-cleaning surface in many cases) |
| Aging & UV Resistance | Excellent (very long aging life) | Good (depends on material quality) |
| Cost | Lower initial cost, higher maintenance over time | Slightly higher upfront, but lower lifecycle cost |
| Application Areas | Still used, especially in legacy or extreme environments | Widely used in modern substations, polluted zones |
