Need Remanufactured Transformers Fast? Let Us Find It For You!
Why are so many utilities buying remanufactured transformers? Because the lead time for new ones is now up to four years! That said, not all “transformer rewinder” shops are created equal. And yes, we know which rewinders you can trust — and which ones you can’t.
About Substation Transformers
Transformers in electrical substations are used to change voltage levels in the power system, serving critical roles in power transmission and distribution. Their main purposes include:
1. Voltage Transformation
- Step-Up Transformers: Increase voltage from the generation level (e.g., 11–33 kV) to high transmission voltages (e.g., 110 kV, 220 kV, or higher).
- Used at power plants or generation substations.
- Step-Down Transformers: Reduce high transmission voltages to lower distribution levels (e.g., from 220 kV to 33 kV, or 33 kV to 11 kV).
- Used in transmission and distribution substations.
2. Power Distribution
- Allow power to be distributed efficiently over long distances (at high voltages) and then safely supplied to homes, industries, and businesses at usable low voltages.
3. System Isolation
- Provide galvanic isolation between different parts of the grid, which helps improve safety, reduce fault propagation, and support maintenance.
4. Voltage Regulation
- Some transformers (like on-load tap-changing transformers) help regulate voltage levels dynamically to keep the supply stable under varying loads.
5. Load Balancing and Control
- Facilitate network planning by allowing utilities to segment loads and redirect power as needed through multiple substations.
6. Interconnection of Networks
- Allow different grids (e.g., regional, utility-level, or private industrial systems) operating at different voltages to be connected and synchronized.

Types of Transformers in Substations
| Type | Use Case |
|---|---|
| Power Transformers | Main voltage conversion at high power |
| Distribution Transformers | Local voltage reduction for end users |
| Instrument Transformers | For measuring voltage/current safely |
| Autotransformers | Efficient voltage adjustment with shared windings |
